"They are still falling: a critical time for Tasmania's high conservation value forests"

A report prepared by Still Wild Still Threatened and the Huon Valley Environment Centre - 12 October 2010. Recent surveys by conservation volunteers in the Derwent and Huon Districts have revealed that large-scale industrial logging, including clearfelling of critical areas of high conservation value forest, continues, with new logging operations recently commencing in coupes with outstanding wilderness and other conservation values.

SWST and the HVEC want to draw attention to the fact that, despite industry claims to be charting a future away from logging native forest, large areas of HCV wilderness continue to be logged, with new coupes being opened as recently as two weeks ago.

'Devils in Danger' - An Investigation into the Threatened Species of the Upper Florentine

'Devils in Danger' - An investigation into the threatened species of the Upper Florentine valley. This report details survey data and methods from flora and fauna surveys recently carried out by SWST in the Upper Florentine forests. Using infra red cameras, SWST has documented several endangered Tasmanian devils and rare spotted-tailed quolls that inhabit the forests of the Upper Florentine valley, this report argues that threatened species habitat must be protected to ensure long term stable habitat conditions for species most at risk.

THE DESTRUCTION OF TASMANIA'S ANCIENT 'REGROWTH' FORESTS - a report on high conservation value forests of the Derwent district

This report was produced by Still Wild Still Threatened to examine the exceptionally high conservation values of forests defined as 'regrowth' that are currently under threat from logging operations.Four case study coupes in the Derwent district are examined. These coupes are defined as regrowth under the Regional Forest Agreement, despite the fact they have never been logged. These ‘regrowth' forests contain ancient trees, rainforest and wilderness values adjacent to the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Threatened forests of the Derwent region Crisis Report 2010. Prepared for the World Heritage Committee and the IUCN

In 2008 the IUCN and the World Heritage Committee made recommendations to the State Party to consider an extension of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Despite this, logging and roading operations have continued in these areas over the past two years. In 2008 Still Wild Still Threatened reported to the IUCN the results of surveys of the world heritage values of proposed logging coupes in the Derwent district of Tasmania, and made recommendations for their inclusion in the TWWHA. During the following year 18 of these were subject to either roading or logging operations. This was detailed in the SWST 2009 Crisis Report. In the past year a further eleven coupes have been subject to industrial scale logging and an additional two have been impacted by roading operations.

This report has been prepared for the World Heritage Committee and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) by Still Wild Still Threatened' (SWST). The purpose of this report is to provide an update on the current status of areas that have been deemed significant by the IUCN and World Heritage Committee (WHC), in the Derwent District (Southern Tasmania).
