Still Wild Still Threatened

in

In 2006, a group of grassroots environmental activists representing forests and communities in Southern Tasmania joined together in recognition of the continuing threat to Tasmania’s ancient forests. Since this time the Still Wild Still Threatened (SWST) campaign for Tasmania’s Southern Forests has garnered significant attention and dramatically raised the public profile of forests such as the Styx, Weld, and Upper Florentine.

SWST advocates for the immediate formal protection of Tasmania’s precious Southern Forests using a combination of political and corporate lobbying, community education, research, exploration and frontline direct action. We also promote the creation of an equitable and environmentally sustainable forest industry in Tasmania. Protecting Tasmania's ancient forests: a real climate change solution.

Media Release - Wednesday 2 March 2011

Immediate Forests Moratorium Supported by Tasmanian community members

Forest Campaigners and members of the community gathered outside
Tasmania's Premier Lara Giddings office today to present the Premier
with a letter requesting the state government immediately direct
Forestry Tasmania to implement the moratorium by March 15th 2011. A
group of sixty concerned members of the public stood out the front of
Hobart's executive building with a message of support for Tasmania's
high conservation value forests to be protected.

"In our experience visiting the forest and community observations
around the state, that Forestry Tasmania are opening up new areas of
logging. As recently as last week in the Tyenna region west of Hobart
logging commenced in forests that are a significant water catchment
for the local community. Despite the Premier's assertion that Forestry
Tasmania is working on the moratorium, it is clear they are not doing
enough to meet the March 15 deadline," Still Wild Still Threatened
spokesperson Miranda Gibson said.

"We are calling on the State Government to honour their commitment to
the moratorium as stated by Premier Bartlett on the 15 December 2010.
Premier Lara Giddings needs to take action and protect high
conservation value forests from further logging, and give a formal
direction to Forestry Tasmania to reschedule logging out of the High
Conservation value forests.  The Federal Government and all
signatories to the statement of principles agreed to the moratorium to
be realised over three months," Huon Valley Environment Centre Jenny
Weber said.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard committed the Federal Government to
deliver on the moratorium, in her Statement of Action on the Tasmanian
Forestry principals on Tuesday 7th December 2010.  The Prime Minister
stated "As a sign of good faith to the parties to the agreement the
Gillard Labor Government is pleased to announce its endorsement of the
Tasmanian Government taking action to have a number of High
Conservation Forest Areas identified by the parties immediately
included as part of a moratorium
on further logging while the next stages of due diligence and details
of the principles are worked through."

"For negotiations to proceed, the moratorium on all high conservation
value forests needs to be in place in order to provide a space for
further talks to continue where forests are not being lost when
agreement to protect them has been reached," Jenny Weber said.

Parliament House Banner Drop

March 8th 2011

Conservationists have today hung a 15 meter banner from the roof of Hobart's Parliament House, calling for a forests moratorium and urgent protection of Tasmania's world class and unique forests.

"Huon Valley Environment Centre and Still Wild Still Threatened have taken action in Tasmania's forests, at the offices of Premier Lara Giddings and now today at Parliament House to pressure the State Government to stay true to their commitment to a progressive moratorium over three months. On December 15th 2010 Premier Bartlett stood by Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke and announced their commitment to the forest principles, starting with the key process of a progressive moratorium over three months," said Miranda Gibson, spokesperson for Still Wild Still Threatened.

"Tasmania's ancient forests, water catchments and wildlife habitat's are being lost to a logging industry in crisis every day. The global community was looking forward to a moratorium on the logging of the high conservation value forests, due to be in place by March 15 2011. It appears that the full moratorium will not be in place and that is due to the lethargic Tasmanian State Government and an industry that is bent on logging Tasmania's last wild places," said Jenny Weber, spokesperson for the Huon Valley Environment Centre.

“Every hectare we lose from these forests we are losing from our future national parks or world heritage area. The moratorium must be implemented to protect these areas for future formal reserves, as agreed by the Statement of Principles, and our organisations will continue to take action to hold the government accountable to this commitment” said Ms Gibson.

Conservationist halt roading operations in the iconic Styx valley - 12/04/2011

Today twelve
conservationists have halted a new roading operation in the Styx Valley as part
of a ten week campaign to highlight the urgent need for Tasmania’s high
conservation value forests to be protected. The recently started roading
operation leads to coupe SX038D and is within a high conservation value area
proposed for formal reserve. One protester is in a tree sit, which is attached
to roading machinery, preventing any operations from continuing for the day.

“The fact that a new road is
currently being pushed into high conservation value forest in a area that
should have been under moratorium weeks ago, is a clear indication that
Forestry Tasmania are not taking appropriate action to reschedule coupes and
implement the moratorium” said Miranda Gibson, spokesperson from Still Wild
Still Threatened.

“How can the Tasmanian
community have faith in Forestry Tasmania when they have not only failed to
meet the moratorium deadline, but are now blatantly disregarding government
directive to reschedule coupes? If Forestry Tasmania were serious about
implementing the moratorium, they certainly would not be wasting taxpayers
money investing in brand new roads to access iconic forests that have been
earmarked for protection.” said Ms Gibson.
